Stavros Kourkoulis

Stavros Kourkoulis obtained his M.Sc. (1984) from the “School of Mechanical Engineering” of the “National Technical University of Athens” (NTUA).
He obtained his Ph.D. (1989) from the “School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences” of the NTUA under the supervision of Academician Professor P.S. Theocaris.
Since 2014 he is Full Professor of Experimental Mechanics at the “Department of Mechanics” of NTUA. Also, since 2014 he is Professor of Mechanics at the “School for Technical Education of the Officers of the Engineering Corps of the Greek Army”.
He is the Scientific Responsible of the Laboratory Units for “Natural Building Stones” and “Biomechanics of the Musculoskeletal System” of the “Laboratory for Testing and Materials” of NTUA.
He was elected as Director of the “Department of Mechanics” and of the “Laboratory for Testing and Materials” of NTUA for the period 2016-2018. Since August 2018 he is elected as the Dean of the “School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences” of the NTUA.
His research interests are related to Experimental Strength of Materials, Theory of Elasticity, Rock Mechanics, Conservation and Restoration of Stone Monuments and Biomechanics of the Musculoskeletal System. He is the author of about 150 scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals and of numerous papers published in reviewed conference proceedings. Also he is the author of three books (in Greek) while he is the Editor of five conference proceedings and the Guest Editor of four special issues of scientific journals.
He is the supervisor of 10 Ph.D. theses and of more than 60 M.Sc. theses and diploma dissertations.
He is Section Editor of “Fracture and Structural Integrity” and member of the Editorial Board of “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering”. He serves as reviewer for more than 70 international scientific journals and he has been member of numerous scientific committees of international conferences.
Currently he is the President of the “Greek Society of Experimental Mechanics of Materials”.
He has implemented, as a Scientific Responsible, more than 30 scientific research projects funded from national and international sources with a total budget exceeding three million Euros.
